October Coach Spotlight!

Mia Goeddeke, U12 Girls

I started my coaching career back in the Fall of 2014 when an old coworker of mine volunteered to lead her son’s co-ed recreational team at FC Ridge (now Sparta Youth Soccer) with no prior soccer experience. She knew I loved the sport and played growing up and thought I would be a perfect assistant. After careful consideration and a little peer pressure, I stepped in to fill the void and help bring together a team with a wide range of skills (U10-U13 coed) who had never played together.

It was either beginners luck or what I like to think of as a healthy combination of great kids and my ability to engage and bring out the best in young athletes that led us to an undefeated season and a championship win that Fall. Not only did this experience validate my love for the sport and the life lessons it can teach children at an early age, but that I was meant to coach!
I took a short break during some personal transitions and found that once I was living in Cedar Springs I lacked a connection to the community. My first thought was to reach out to local soccer clubs for coaching needs so started with CASSA in January of 2016. There was a need for board members at the time so I initially started there and patiently waited for a team to open up that I could call my own. In the meantime, I assisted Chris Frilen with the U14 boys and then eventually got my own team two years ago.
Since then, I’ve been head coach of the '07 girls team and have loved every minute of it! We’ve had our ups and downs, but are on a wonderful path to success! The team is currently undefeated this season after moving up a division from last year and still have so much progress to look forward to!
My coach staff consists of Chuck Carnes and Jason Grant who have been amazing additions. Our styles compliment one another and we all see the importance of teaching good decision making over outcomes.
The future is bright and we will continue to provide a positive yet challenging learning environment for these amazing girls!
